RIHANNA GRACES 'BLACK WOMAN' MAGAZINE & IS THE NEW FACE OF GUCCI CAMPAIGN.....

Rihanna continues to fill up newsstands on the magazine front this week. In the latest issue of Black Woman, she also graces their front cover:

An interesting headline to accentuate the image reads: 'Fashion Icon...The Face of Beauty'. It's taken her a minute to get that title but after coming a long way, she deserves it. Her style has been very sharp and polished within the past year. Rihanna has also signed up to be the face of Gucci's upcoming "Tattoo Heart" campaign for children's charity UNICEF. Launching in December, the ad campaign will feature the singer sporting a line of limited-edition Gucci products.

MAGAZINES: MARY J BLIGE ON VEGAS; SOLANGE, KERI & TEYANA ON RAP-UP.....

Mary J Blige graces the latest cover of Vegas magazine, whereas R&B chicks Solange Knowles, Keri Hilson and Teyana Taylor grace the August issue of Rap-Up magazine as 2008's "Brave New Girls":

Keri Hilson will premiere her new video 'Energy' tonight on 106 & Park. Teyana will premiere her new single when she opens the Diesel spring/summer 09 beachwear show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim on July 17th in Miami. Her new single is called 'Move' and it was produced by Hit-Boy.

In the issue of Vegas, Mary shows her disdain towards American Idol artists: "Honestly, it’s not giving most of them a real chance to become an artist for the rest of their lives", she explains. "They are on national TV every night. They have automatic fame. All of the greatest artists had to struggle for their success".

I agree with her comment to an extent except for the last line. Just because someone auditioned for American Idol doesn't mean they didn't struggle. Appearing on a popular talent show, singing in front of over 30 million viewers and constantly having your singing abilities judged isn't easy either and takes a lot of guts and courage. As long as that artist is talented and they are marketed correctly, I don't see how they can't have a lasting career to those who got their record deals the good ole fashion way.

MAGAZINES: RIHANNA'S 'INSTYLE' COVER + PHOTOSHOOT.....

Rihanna is seen modeling her "beach style" for the August 2008 issue of In Style magazine. Check out the photoshoot below:

Here's a few extracts from the issue:

In Style: How do you dress for a full day at the beach?
Rihanna: Very comfortably. I like wearing a bikini with a cover-up that’s loose, not too long and a little bit sheer. Flip-flops of course, I like Havaianas (a brazilian sandal) because they are so easy to wash off - the sand sticks to my feet, and that gets annoying.

In Style: What’s your hot beach club look?
Rihanna: A Short dress in a vibrant color that flatters my legs - and I do like showing mine. With accessories, I try not to do too much. So, simple jewelry like gold earrings. And I trade in the flip-flops for a pair of Gucci Shoes.

Two more pics after the cut.

MARIAH CAREY COVERS 'ELLE'.....

Mariah Carey looks absolutely stunning in a brand new spread that she did for the latest issue of Elle:

Doing photoshoots is what Mariah is good at. Here's what she says about her marriage to Nick Cannon: "We really kept the whole relationship aspect of it quiet, therefore, we didn’t really 'date,' you know what I mean? Because that would have been not quiet or private. I think we didn't want to give people a chance to be like, ‘What are you doing? What are you talking about? This is so quick... are you sure?" Weird explanation but whatev. Check out the rest after the cut. Thanks Roy.

JORDIN SPARKS PERFORMS 'ONE STEP AT A TIME' ON 'SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE' // JET COVER....

UPDATE: JORDIN'S 'JET' COVER HAS NOW BEEN ENCLOSED.

American Idol
champ
Jordin Sparks performed her latest new single 'One Step At A Time' this week on dance reality show 'So You Think You Can Dance':

Cute performance. She absolutely LOVES those type of dresses. They have this tendency to make her look bigger than what she is. I look forwards to seeing what's in store for her next album. I really like this chick but she deserves better songs. More Jordin after the cut.

Jordin also graces the front cover of the July 2008 issue of Jet:

LEONA LEWIS COVERS JULY 2008 ISSUE OF BLENDER....

Check out squeaky clean Leona Lewis in the July 2008 issue of Blender magazine, which hits newsstands on June 10th:

Here's an interesting quote from the issue: "I don't wear little miniskirts and low-cut tops. If you want to show your bits off, it's up to you. When I was 18, I had a few glasses of Alcopop — they're bubblegummy drinks with a bit of alcohol — and it was gross. I've tasted champagne, which is gross. And I tasted wine, which I don't like." Her sex life must be very boring in deed. I guess experimenting in the bedroom outside of missionary is .... gross? I know everyone has their limits, but this is the same chick who won't rock diamonds because she doesn't know the source of their extraction and now she thinks champagne is gross. Oh well, better to be Leona than
Amy Winehouse.

In the issue, she talks bout the pain of losing her 20-year-old cousin in a horrific car crash 2 years ago and how it affected her life, as well as why she's attracted to the older fella. The 27-year-old who has been dating her rapper boyfriend Nelly for over three years says: "I've never dated anyone who wasn't at least 4 or 5 years older than me. I need somebody who's way past me, because we don't get anything from each other if we're the same". More after the cut.

CHRIS BROWN'S 'EBONY' PHOTOSHOOT....

Last week, I posted Chris Brown's magazine cover for his latest feature in the June 2008 issue of Ebony. Now you can check out the full spread below:

The pictures may be photoshopped to the max, but he looks scrum. The 19-year-old heart throb who is currently dating Rihanna, has three main steps in order for the lucky gal to capture his heart:

1. Don't throw yourself at him because he won't respect you for it!
"It's a turn on too, but it can be a turnoff. They're degrading themselves...It's just annoying, like bugging versus being themselves, you know what I'm saying?"

2. When throwing your panties at him, always make sure they're clean!
"Ah you cant touch every panty" he says, laughing. "I get a drumstick and I pick it up like, 'OK, these drawers better be clean.' But it's funny to see panties thrown up. You see bras, and big bras, and you're like wow. That's amazing. But if it was a man drawers. I'd definitely think it was nasty".

3. As much as he loves his fans, he'd only date one if she could move past him being a celebrity.
"I would date a fan. It just depends on how much a fan they are. Can they see past me being an artist and look at me for who I am as a person?"

Click here to check out behind-the-scenes footage of Chris's Ebony photoshoot.

ALICIA KEYS, JILL SCOTT & MARY J. BLIGE COVER SPECIAL EDITION OF ESSENCE....

ESSENCE magazine has an annual 'Black Music Month' for their latest June issue. It features three of today's influential R&B/Soul sensation's and Alicia Keys, Jill ScottMary J. Blige all having their own impressionable covers for the special edition:

R&B is very much the evolution of today's music scene, which I'm very happy about, being an R&B fanatic myself. With artists, REAL artists like Alicia, Mary and Jill on the scene, R&B will never be dead. The three ladies talk to Essence Editor Regina R. Robertson about how they've managed to stay relevant for so long in their careers as well as their success and longevity. You can check out an excerpt from the interview after the cut. If you want to read more, the magazine is on sale right now.

Rounding up three multiplatinum, Grammy-winning chart-toppers is no small feat, especially when they’re stationed in different cities and different time zones. Did we mention that one of them was on tour (Mary), one had just come off tour (Jill), and the other was between tours (Alicia)?

For us, Alicia, Mary and Jill are the truth and the light in R&B. During the past year, they, along with other female singers, have bumped the ’hood boys off the top of the charts. No offense, . fellas, but it’s always ladies first here. As the following excerpts from individual chats with each artist reveal, when it comes to penning hits, embracing success, and keeping ahead of the curve, it’s always about the music.

Essence: One thing you all have in common is that you each had a debut album that was a phenomenal success. How do you feel when you hear those songs now?

Mary J. Blige: It’s been about six months since I’ve listened to What’s the 411? I was in Japan working out, and when I heard it, I could definitely feel my youth, but I could also hear that I’ve always had an old soul. When I think back to that time, I remember that I was singing to escape. I understand that some people are stuck in that place, but I firmly believe that if you don’t evolve and grow, you will die.

Essence: From the outside looking in, it seems that success has been yours since day one, but there probably were, and are, disappointments. How do you cope when a project doesn’t pan out?

Jill Scott: This is life, and if something doesn’t work out, then it wasn’t meant to. I feel that there is a divine plan in all things. All I can do is the best I can do, and if it’s well received, then, yeah. If not, I hope life will give me an opportunity to try again. Do I challenge myself? Absolutely. But beat myself up? I just can’t do it.

Essence: Have you ever regretted folding to pressure from record labels?

Alicia Keys: In the beginning, I didn’t understand the concept of boundaries. I wanted to make sure the music was heard, but there’s a price you pay for that. I did everything and anything to promote my first album, like flying from New York to Los Angeles and back on the same day, which was a bit excessive.

Essence: Have you figured out the ingredients for the perfect song?

Mary: Yes, but I won’t tell. [Laughs] For me, it’s about being real and honest. And the lyrics have to be relatable.

Jill: Oh, I wish I knew. I think Ne-Yo knows. I think Carvin Haggins, who does a lot of writing for Musiq Soulchild, has the ingredients, too. My songs are mostly about life experiences, about being human and falling and getting back up. About loving and losing.

Essence: But aren’t those the ingredients right there?

Alicia: It’s always a bit of a mystery. A song should deal with a widely understood emotion, have a really strong, clear explanation of that emotion and a great melody that makes you want to sing it at the top of your lungs. Then the music should evoke the same feeling as the lyrics. Somewhere within all of that lies the perfect song.

THE FADAR HONOURS AALIYAH AND HER LEGACY....

The FADER tributes the late yet inspirational Aaliyah in its Annual Icon issue which features contributions from producers, family, friends & peers. Here's press release for the issue:

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah Dana Haughton entered the music scene with her first album, "Age Aint Nothing but a Number" at the age of 15. From that point forward, Aaliyah began to revolutionize the popscape with a quick and effortless swoop, embodying what the editors of The FADER love right now; her influence in 2008 an omnipresent force from the futuristic megahits dominating the airwaves to the demure pop sensibilities fluttering throughout the underground. Now as a hardcore fan, I'm going to add something to this Aaliyah tribute. Aaliyah was one of my favourite R&B artists in the whole world. She wasn't that much older than me so I could relate to her music and I grew up with it. I was incensed by her beauty. It was a beauty like no other. In fact back then, I was convinced that no one could come any more beautiful than her. The nice thing about it was that, she wasn't just a beauty on the outside but she had true beauty within. She always cared about the feelings of others. You NEVER ever heard bad encounters that she ignored her fans or that she acted like a straight up diva. And she had a deep underlying passion for her craft. She took herself seriously in every career path she contended with. I loved Aaliyah for her street but sweet style, her angelic vocals and hard hitting infectious beats. She was unique and different but extraordinary in a greatly positive way. As she grew up in front of us, so did her style and womanly elegance. As for her last album 'Aaliyah' it was her most innovative, her most inspirational and her most creative - a fantastic conglomeration of a great mix of different musical styles. She entered a place that she'd never entered before (or any of her peers for that matter). She took a risk far greater than anyone else in her field of music, and that alone made her legendary and put her waaaay above her peers. 'Aaliyah' was one of the most inventive albums to come out that year, and to this day, still is. Now you can check out the rest of the press release and the other tributes after the cut.

Before Aaliyah's life was cut short in 2001, the Grammy-nominated artist sold millions of records worldwide—collaborating with producers and artists including Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Although Aaliyah was only in the spotlight for a short time, she had a major impact on these artists personally, and many others professionally including Mark Ronson, Ciara, Method Man, Beth Ditto, and Kid Sister. These artists and more were all interviewed, offering their take on how Aaliyah’s impact has transcended over the years, long after her death.

"It only took Aaliyah a few albums to make an indelible mark on the world of pop music, but today her influence can be felt across numerous genres," said Chris Richards, Executive Editor of The FADER. "This issue not only tracks that influence, but also offers a more personal glimpse into the life of a true pop visionary."

Missy Elliott
"We was gonna save the world. We was gonna change music every chance we got. We was gonna always be family. Forever."

Mark Ronson
"If it wasn't for Aaliyah being the face and voice of [Missy Elliott and Timbaland's] sound they might have never got to where they did. They were presenting their sort of brilliant but challenging breakthrough music through this beautiful young girl who could sing it perfectly."

Kidada Jones
"I think about her all the time...Anytime she's brought up or her music comes on the radio, it’s sweet, but it definitely sounds like she found a niche before it was here. If you listen to her music it's so relevant today, but we had it so long ago."

Damon Dash
"She was already a fashion icon, she was getting into movies, she had already planted that seed. If she was alive today she would be so relevant. I see little bits of her everywhere I look, in a lot of artists."

CHRIS BROWN COVERS 'EBONY'....

Check out heart throb R&B prince Chris Brown on the June 2008 issue of Ebony magazine. The singer, who turned 19 yesterday, is showing us he's all man now:

The cutie sat down for an exclusive interview with the magazine to discuss his musical growth, sex and the women in his life including Rihanna (whom he insists he's just good friends with). When asked about dating, he says: "I date sometimes. If I ever had a girlfriend, it'd always be a problem. Fans want you to be attainable. I try to stay away from even having a girl. I go on dates, talk to a couple chicks on the phone". His new single Forever has managed to make it to #9 on the Billboard chart and his re-release Exclusive: The Forever Edition, will be out on June 3rd.

RIHANNA'S PHOTOSHOOT FOR 'ELLE'....

You've seen Rihanna's cover for the June 2008 issue of Elle magazine, and now you can view pictures from the photoshoot. They were taken by photographer Gilles Bensimon. Check them out below:

She looks flamboyantly hot. I always said that if she wasn't a singer she could be a glam or even a runway model because she has all the right qualities; the looks, the height, the photogenic edge. In the interview, Rihanna talks about her relationships with her father Ronald Fenty, Jay-Z and Chris Brown as well as her quick rise to super stardom. You can read tidbits from the interview after the cut, but to read the whole interview you'll have to buy the magazine which is on sale right now.

Rihanna on her hair:
“I kept telling my managers, I’m cutting my hair. I’m cutting my hair. And they’re like, ‘How short? Not too short. Cut it how short?’ And I’m like, ‘Up to here,’ ” Rihanna says, raising her hand up to her ear. “They never believed me. So when it was time to do the album cover [for Good Girl], the night before I cut it, I dyed it black. We went straight to the photo shoot, and no one at the record label knew what I looked like. When we sent the pictures over, they saw the hair and they all loved it. They loved it.”

On the success of “Umbrella:”
“That song is very, very magical,” says the singer, nodding her heart-shape face. “Because even when I travel, I can’t believe the kind of people that know that record. Their age, their nationality, they don’t speak English, but they all know that song.”

On her formerly alcoholic father:
“That was way, way, way back,” she says, shaking her head and staring at her dish of pasta. “We’re friends now. Now my dad is like the coolest person on the planet. He doesn’t smother me. He lets me live my life. And he’s been like that a lot, even when I was younger. He would watch me making a mistake and he wouldn’t stop me. My dad, he lets me make it and then I learn.”

On singing in front of Jay-Z for the first time:
“I remember staring into everybody’s eyes in the room while I was singing, and at that point, I was fearless,” she says about the audition. “But the minute I stopped singing, I was like, Oh my God, Jay-Z is sitting right in front of me.”

On the rumor about a relationship with Jay-Z:
“Well, it’s crazy that you ask me that. People know that it’s not true,” she says, straightening up. “I think it’s kinda a cliché question, and people know it’s not true, so I don’t even know why it’s still addressed to this day. I get asked about it all the time and I’m like, You’re asking, but you know the answer. I don’t even like to address it anymore.”

On Chris Brown:
“We’ve always been friends, but we’re very close now.” [SOURCE]

MARIAH CAREY COVERS JUNE 2008 ISSUE OF 'VIBE'....

Mariah Carey looks absolutely sizzling on the June 2008 cover of Vibe magazine. The magazine is available on newsstands on Tuesday, May 6th:

The singer, reported to have married actor Nick Cannon last week, did the shoot on location at Eagle's Landing, a private island off the coast of Antigua where she celebrated her 38th birthday. Writer Shanel Odum has also written a day's account during her time with Mariah surrounding the shoot. You can check it out after the cut as well as pictures from the photoshoot.

2PM: Mariah Carey's $12,500-a night villa on the 300-acre tropical island is alive and almost antsy....A gang of hairstylists, fashion assistants, photographers, and makeup artists race around the open-air bungalow, each on their own mission to please.

5PM: The 5-foot-9 mirage prances past the overly attentive pack and heads towards a rickety boardwalk, which instantly transforms into her runway. A magenta silk robe whips against those endless, copper legs; black Christian Louboutin heels stab the sand; a wild halo of corkscrew curls flies.

7:30PM: Mariah Carey's 38th birthday banquet is a Sweet 16 dream…Beckoning palms welcome guests to the entrance of the veranda....The scene inside is a strawberry-frosted pubescent fantasy: purple, pink, and white balloons dance in the balmy Caribbean breeze....And then Mariah’s posse begins to appear. Longtime confidante Shawntae 'Da Brat' Harris breezes past…Recent acquaintance/music video director ('Bye Bye') Nick Cannon grabs his laptop and goes to the buffet to fix a plate…Fuchsia feather boas drip from arms of every chair...Kitschy gold crowns, tiaras, and noisemakers adorn each place setting...As her guests fawn, Mariah drifts from friend to friend, beaming and blowing kisses.

VIBE PHOTOSHOOT:

WOW. Her stomach is sooooo defined. GO MARIAH!

MARIAH CAREY DOES i-D....

Mariah Carey looks absolutely smokin' in the JUNE 2008 issue of i-D magazine. I guess she lost all that weight so that she could do photoshoots like this:

I'm strictly dickly, but I think I would actually do Mariah right now. I mean, really. And before anyone asks, I don't buy for one second that she went ahead and married Nick Cannon. This shit is getting out of hand. Mariah is quick to defend her name at reports that she called Jennifer Lopez a pig. In fact, the heffa put out a statement on the same day but I'm baffled as to why she has yet to put out a statement to put a stop to the madness.
